The jungle and Tikal

Wow, wow, wow - what a sensational day. We were up very early for a huge breakfast in the hotel before heeding off for the 35km trip from the lake to Tikal. As you anter the Tikal UNESCO area, you are warned to travel slowly and be careful of animals. All of this is standard stuff for any national park in any country, but it was the very first tine that io have ever seen a cautioning us to be careful of jaguars. This certainly made our photo stops along the roadway brief and with more than one look over the shoulder.

When we entered the park, we decided to engage the services of a guide. Carlos introduced himself to us, and we agreed a price for him to guide us into the jungle and out to the Mayan ruins. There are no vehicles in this area, so we needed to go in on foot. Ty and I removed the bottom half of our pants to make things a little cooler for the trek. BAD MOVE. As it turns out, there are quite a fee insects in the jungle that like to eat stuff like people. Within 15 minutes, both of us has trickles of blood running on our legs and were slapping the bloody things furiously. Some of the insects are about an inch kng and quite beautiful, but they also sting like hell. (when we emerged from then jungle later in the day, our legs had spots all over them and looked really terrible, but this mostly subsided by the time evening came).
